About

Hello there! My name is Shane Dresch, a Director of Photography and creative professional based in Chicago, IL.

From dashing outside at the sound of tornado sirens with the family camcorder to making homemade “movies” with friends, visual stories have always captured my full attention. I remember being drawn to the photography in the National Geographic articles my father would read to me, the stories enriched by the visuals of different cultures and far-off lands.

Motivated by a learning disability in reading, writing, and comprehension which challenged traditional academic paths, I would try to persuade my teachers to let me create video projects instead of writing essays. In high school, I gravitated towards the darkroom and photo classes, where I received guidance from phenomenal art teachers. Having multiple examples of artists turning their passion into a career was empowering for me to witness.

Despite the academic challenges, I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Video Production and went on to pursue my Master’s in Digital Storytelling at Ball State University. Who would have thought, when you’re learning about something you love, it would be easier to excel? My passion lies in the craft of shaping and telling stories. I’m one of those people who gets goosebumps from a beautiful crescendo in a song or witnessing all the expressions of love people offer one another while saying goodbye at the airport. Being part of a craft that has the ability to make someone feel something… well, if that’s not exciting, then I don’t know what is.

Since 2015, I’ve worked on a wide range of projects, from commercials and brand content to nonprofit work, music videos, and documentaries. In addition to my role as DP, I contribute as a Director, Gaffer, Grip, Camera Operator, AC, and Loader. While writing dialogue may not be my specialty, I thrive in bringing visual stories to life, including projects that have earned regional Emmy nominations for cinematography and the occasional win at an indie horror contest.

Freelancing this year has allowed me to be more mindful and take note of what truly lights up my brain. The energy I get from the act of physically shaping light and crafting narratives through cinematography, as well as creative problem-solving alongside a collaborative crew, is second to none.

I appreciate you stopping by and hope you have a great day!
